Mausoleum

Mausoleum

The summit of the Vittoriale is occupied by the Mausoleum, a funeral monument designed by the architect Maroni after d’Annunzio’s death. The monument is inspired by the graves of the Etruscan-Roman tradition and consists of three circles made of Botticino marble to represent the victories of the Humble, of the Sappers and of the Heroes. At the centre of the upper esplanade lies the tomb of d’Annunzio surrounded by ten of the heroes and legionaries of Fiume who were dear to the poet; these include Guido Keller, Giuseppe Piffer, Ernesto Cabruna and the architect Gian Carlo Maroni.
