Studi e letture / Studies and readings

Bachelard reader of d’Annunzio: for a poetics of the phoenix.

Viviana Reda

The essay establishes a connection between the evolution of Bachelard’s philosophical meditation and the poetical research by d’Annunzio. First, Viviana Reda brings us to know the foundations of the philosopher’s thought. The basis of his philosophy are reflected in poetics and literary work by d’Annunzio: Bachelard takes his inspiration and finds a confirmation for his meditation about the fire element from here.  In order to stress this bond, the author transcribes quotations and extracts from Bachelard and d’Annunzio’s texts all along the article.

In the second part, the essay lingers on some considerations concerning the characteristics of the poetry by d’Annunzio and his lessical choices. Once again, this is related with Bachelard’s thoughts about imagination (rêverie) and Poetry, interpreted throught the fire’s and his “poetics of the Phoenix” (poétique du Phénix) key of reading.

Il Poeta, il Papa e il Dittatore. L’Opera Omnia di Gabriele d’Annunzio all’Indice e i difficili rapporti tra Stato e Chiesa all’ombra del Concordato / The Poet, the Pope and the Dictator. The Opera Omnia of d’Annunzio condemned to the Index and the State-Church difficult relationship in the shadow of the Concordato (Lateran Pacts)

Matteo Brera

The essay written by Matteo Brera reveals the game of repartee, accusations and controversies played by three of the most influent characters at the time: d’Annunzio, Mussolini and the Pope Pius XI. Through the examination of the documents – some of which belong to the Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and are published here for the first time – we discover the “underground” relationship between the Holy See and the Fascist government. That relationship is specially analysed in the context of the Opera Omnia’s pubblication, that created a delicate balance between the need of a censorship towards the immoral literary work by the Poet and the necessity of not to bump the liaison with the Fascist government on the Lateran Accord’s eve. All this happens in a game of balance of strenght and power between the Roman Church and the Kingdom of Italy.

Il linguaggio della follia: le “dementi” nell’opera di d’Annunzio / The madness language: the insane women in d’Annunzio literary work

Manuele Marinoni

A trip through the theatral dramas and the novels by discovering the women’s madness in d’Annunzio’s literary production, from Sogno d’un mattino di primavera (The Dream of a Spring Morning) to Solus ad Solam. The literary delirium develops in the perpetual interweaving between love, sickness and death, which the Poet investigates by means of his heroines in their most dramatic and lyrical aspects; their madness bring them towards a “transfiguration”, by approaching to the totality, to the unknown and almost always to the death, in a historical context of the first medical studies and singular theories about women sickness.

Le Faville del Lebbroso / The Faville of the Lebbroso

Chiara Arnaudi

The Stanza del Lebbroso (Leper’s room) is one of the most significant Prioria’s room, whose decorations were committed to the artist Guido Cadorin. Where did d’Annunzio take the sources and the inspiration for these images? This essay analyses the bond between the Storia di san Francesco d’Assisi (Histoire de Saint Francois D’Assise) by Emile Chavin de Malan and the four so called “Faville del lebbroso” by d’Annunzio, primary and secondary sources for the iconographic of the “Zambra del Misello” (the literal translation would be “the miserable’s bedroom”), whose project of realization ran in parallel to the writing of these prose by the Poet.

“La colorata anima del Vittoriale”: aggiunte e precisazioni su alcune vetrate di Pietro Chiesa / “La colorata anima del Vittoriale”: additions and clarifications about some Pietro Chiesa’s glass windows

Lucia Mannini

The glass windows that enhance the Prioria and the Schifamondo’s new residence are described by the author through the analysis of the style, the iconography and the sources.

I francobolli di Fiume. Una storia difficile e straziante / The Fiume stamps. A difficult and heartrending story

Augusto Traina

The generous donation by Augusto Traina to the Vittoriale degli Italiani of twenty-seven albums of stamps issued in the Fiume’s enterprise period allows us to retrace the philately’s evolution in the free city of Fiume. This story intertwines the issue of postage stamps with the historical and politic events in the city, by describing the troubled years that will lead, only in 1924, to the long-awaited annexation to Italy.
