L’erma bifronte della modernità / The two-faced herma of the modernity

Claudia Salaris

Claudia Salaris proposes a comparison between Gabriele d’Annunzio and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, two controversial but cardinal personalities for the contemporary art scene. With only 13-years age difference, they both have represented among Italy and Europe the figure of the new author, nationalist and cosmopolitan at the same time, aware of the new possibilities given by the modern world. Similar in their passions, education and also in the appearance, they both dealt with politics and literary inventions by influencing and criticizing each other at once. In this essay we follow the development of the relationship between these characters, also by passing through the Fiume experience and the Italian Fascist drifting, which transformed these revolutionary personalities in the jewel in the crown of the regime.

The combinatory art of the Sogno d’un tramonto d’autunno

Giorgio Zanetti

Studying the elaboration of a peculiar theatrical text as it is the Sogno d’un tramonto d’autunno, the essay analyses the refined procedures through which the dramaturgic writing of d’Annunzio absorbs in its fantasy plot the hints and suggestions from the most disturbing late-positivistic historiography, where erudition becomes history of culture. In fact, what it’s realised in the textual composition, is a metamorphosis, dense with anthropological implications, from the history to the legend, that involves a multiple branched out reference to the “Antonio and Cleopatra” by Shakespeare, between historic drama and romance. The idea of the legend is coherent and functional to the Poet’s project of a new theatre for the people: even if the legend does not correspond to an objective truth, it is the form through which the archaeology builds the history, its unconscious reality that enlightens the dreamlike images of an inimitable but remarkable life, as it is established by the “mass culture”.

La sestina lirica dannunziana: riscrittura di una forma metrica / The lyrical sestet of d’Annunzio: the re-writing of a metrics form

Chiara Arnaudi

Throughout his life, Gabriele d’Annunzio utilized two peculiar type of sestet: the lyrical sestet, called “provenzalesca” by the Poet, typical of Petrarca’s literary production and reused by d’Annunzio for his own works, and the narrative sestet, defined as “metro poltrone” by Tommaso-Bellini, experimented in the latest period of the Vittoriale and rarely employed by the leading figures of the Italian literary culture between the 19th and the 20th century. The paper, using cites and references to Petrarca and Carducci, the contemporary so called “adversary teacher”, displays the reasons behind the choice of a metric form instead of another and the considerations d’Annunzio has made about their utilization.

Due alcioni per d’Annunzio: una questione onomastica / Two alcyon for d’Annunzio: an onomastics matter

Enrica Gambin

D’Annunzio had already announced in the August of 1900 his intention to entitle the first three books of his new poetical project to the Pleiades: Merope, Maia and Alcione. Whereas the Poet, writing the first two works, recovers the specific mythological tale of the two sisters, and he’s influenced by it, things are different for Alcione: the third sister’s figure, in fact, splits into two separate entities. Enrica Gambin, in her paper, writes about the two Alcioni of the classical mythology and explains how they took part in the poetical masterpiece of d’Annunzio, who put them together to the point that he almost confuses them.

Nuove carte di Alcyone: note sull’elaborazione / New Alcyone‘s papers: notes on the elaboration

Giulia Belletti

The acquisition of documents and autograph drafts of some still unpublished Alcyone’s lyrics gives the author the pretext for new considerations, with the purpose of a future tuning of the critical edition of the famous poems’ collection. Thanks to the study of these documents it has been possible to reconstruct d’Annunzio’s creative process and, in some cases, also the accurate chronology of their composition. For each of the fifteen lyrics here analysed, are reported the new info acquired, the corrections and the reconsiderations of the drafts, all of these compared to the choices made in the definitive version.

La raccolta di fotografie d’arte di Henry Thode e Gabriele d’Annunzio: un progetto di riordino e schedatura informatica / The Henry Thode photografic collection of artworks and Gabriele d’Annunzio: a project of reorganisation and informatic cataloguing

Marco Mozzo

Henry Thode, after his sudden escape from Italy at the beginning of the Great War, left in Cargnacco a huge amount of prints and images that had been his work tool as an art historian. D’Annunzio, after acquiring the villa, kept and increased, in turn, this precious collection, giving to posterity the photographic fund we admire at the Vittoriale nowadays. It includes the productions of the most important characters in the field of specialized photography, who reproduced artworks and architecture elements, on supports of various sizes and with different typologies of techniques. The aims of the reorganisation project are the inventory, the digitalisation and the informatic cataloguing of the fund, in order to create a data base that will be the starting point for future researches.

Forme e motivi del collezionismo dannunziano: lo scrittoio del Monco e la stanza del Lebbroso / Modalities and patterns of d’Annunzio’s collecting: the scrittoio del Monco and the stanza del Lebbroso

Rossana Cerretti

The paper is part of a didactical project, addressed to the students of the scientific high school “Nicolò Copernico” in Brescia, that explores d’Annunzio’s activity as a collector inside the complex of the Vittoriale. The research operation has been developed under the direction of Rossana Cerretti, who in this essay presents an abstract of the work concerning two rooms of the Prioria: the Scrittoio del Monco and the Stanza del Lebbroso (Leper’s room). Thanks to her analyses, it is possible to know the sources, the references and the countless possible meanings of the collected or commissioned furnishings, of the artworks and of the mottos that crowd the two rooms.
